Original Afghan War Rug

Curated Mantiques Collection

Recently we came across this amazing piece. We saw quite quickly what it was, an Afghan War Rug. These rugs are handmade and first saw the light in 1980 after the Russian left Afghanistan in defeat. They have since become a 'popular' item in the west where art historians and anthropologist alike have commented on them. Some highlighting the voices behind the terror and others affirming that it is a market demand which made this rugs become so sought after and well-know. It is of course impossible to look at these rugs without connecting the image to the reality of a seemingly non-stop war torn country. This particular rug is very interesting as it seems to be an actual earlier example of a Beluchi war rug showing Russian tank, helicopters and fighter planes. We have had this rug looked at by a US based expert who thinks this looks like an early rug in good condition making this a real collectors piece. Some information about War Rugs can be read in this recent article on The Conversation.
