The A-2 U.S. Air Force flight jacket is arguably the most iconic flight jacket to come out of World War 2. It was worn by the very fit and good looking American pilots who came over to Europe, Africa and Asia to fight against the Axis powers. The jacket features a quite unique combination between great manly looks, history and functionality. The jackets were all made out of leather (goat and horse the most common ones), they were worn with a high waist fit and often decorated on their backs with so called nose art and squadron patches on the front. Originals are worth the price of a decent car and some reproductions also go into four figures. We carefully select our flight jackets curating them on quality, authenticity and general good looks. This one was made by outdoor evergreen brand L.L. Bean who apparently took a small step into the air with this jacket. They have done a great job replicating the A-2 jacket. A subtle dark toned leather and even a thinsulate liner for extra cozyness.

L.L.Bean was founded in 1912 by its namesake, hunter and fisherman Leon Leonwood Bean, in Freeport, Maine. The company began as a one-room operation selling a single product, the Maine Hunting Shoe, also known as duck boots and later as Bean Boots. Bean had developed a waterproof boot, which is a combination of lightweight leather uppers and rubber bottoms, that he sold to hunters. He obtained a list of nonresident Maine hunting license holders, prepared a descriptive mail order circular, set up a shop in his brother's basement in Freeport and started a nationwide mail-order business. By 1912, he was selling the Bean Boot through a four-page mail-order catalog, and the boot remains a staple of the company's outdoor image. Defects in the initial design led to 90 percent of the original production run being returned: Bean honoured his money-back guarantee, corrected the design, and continued selling them. L.L. Bean has since become a household name in the USA for way more than just their original gum boot. We at Concrete Matter love finding 1950s and 60s wool garments by L.L. Bean as well as flight jackets, hunting jackets and vests to bucket hats and safari jackets all made with a no nonsense approach to functionality over fashion.
