This hornbill skull is a perfect example of how bizarre and beautiful nature can be at the same time. The name hornbill refers to the casque on the upper mandible of both the male and female birds. In some species this casque is made of solid ivory and used to batter in fights among males. More regularly it is functions as a boombox to resonate the typical call of hornbills. This is exactly what it is used for in this black casqued hornbill skull. The skull is mounted on a solid piece of wenge hardwood - native to central Africa just like the hornbill itself.
