The galaxy is still, for the most part, a big mystery to us. Imagine how this must have been even more so in early 20th century, right when these photos were taken. The images are from a selection made by a German Professor, Max Wolf from Heidelberg, named "Stereoskopbilder vom Sternhimmel". This is when photography is at its best: combining physics, science and imagination.
